Extremely Lazy Windowsill Gardening

Apartment Gardening

I live walking distance from the beach in a studio apartment that costs more per month than the mortgages on most single family homes in the Midwest (or so I've been told by out-of-towners who are mortified by my living costs on my behalf). Even while I'm slowly starving to death or barely making my car payment, I can't help but feel that all my (preventable) financial suffering is worth it when I walk outside & catch a whiff of brine.

Unfortunately, my large rent payment doesn't ensure studio apartment perfection. I'm on the first floor facing the gated entrance, which means everybody entering or exiting the building gets an extensive view of my (perpetually messy) living space. I try not to leave my blinds wide open during the day for just this reason. This means, sadly, that any & all houseplants are likely to die from lack of sunshine.

I recently remedied my need for green by plucking an overripe onion from my fridge & placing it in a jar of water. Ta da! Instant windowsill garden!

As it turns out, a lot of the edibles in your fridge are perfecting for planting. Here are a few ideas:
Do you have any other ideas for low maintenance apartment gardening? Because I'm pulling a sweet potato out of my refrigerator next!

In Which China's First Lady Thanks My Great Grandmother for the Cake

Untitled

It's totes unfair that I'm sitting in a cubicle trying to make something of my life as a pupil transportation/school & hospital security journalist when my great grandmother was a badass who regularly sent baked goods to the First Lady of China. Talk about not being able to live up to your family's awesomeness.

Where'd You Go, Weekend?

Time for a Cat Nap
I'm going to go out on a limb & say it's good to cultivate diverse interests. That way, when you receive a spontaneous midnight invitation to an underground Afro Beat concert that requires a password for admittance, you'll be all, hell yeah! & toss your knitting aside. Then, when you're all tuckered out from slam dancing, you can curl up in bed with a cat & a book on 17th century Persia that you borrowed from the local library.

In between all the garter stitching & top-secret warehouse partying, I also cooked myself a super classy dinner of broiled hoki, mashed sweet potatoes, & brussels sprouts. Just because I live alone doesn't mean I eat crackers & peanut butter all the time.

SproutsLemons

Quick fish recipe invented by moi (serves one...because one is the loneliest number & needs cats):

  • Juice of half a lemon
  • Spoonful of virgin olive oil
  • One clove of garlic, chopped
  • A dash (or more, if you like it spicy) of cayenne pepper
  • A dash of sea salt
  • A dash of freshly ground pepper

Mix ingredients together and pour over fish. Broil until cooked to your liking (eight minutes did it for me & didn't set off my smoke alarm, so that's good).

That was my weekend, anyway. How was yours?
