In Which China's First Lady Thanks My Great Grandmother for the Cake

It's totes unfair that I'm sitting in a cubicle trying to make something of my life as a pupil transportation/school & hospital security journalist when my great grandmother was a badass who regularly sent baked goods to the First Lady of China. Talk about not being able to live up to your family's awesomeness.

PhotobucketI was perusing the online archives at my alma mater when I discovered a few postcards from my great grandfather postmarked from China in 1929 (above). That seemed cool, but a letter signed by "Madame Chiang Kai-shek" took the cake (literally).

The letter said:

Headquarters of the Generalissimo

Shanghai, China.
April 25, 1937.

Dear Mrs. Young,

I am sorry I have delayed in thanking you for your kindness in sending me the cake the other day. We are so busy that I overlooked it.

Appreciating your kindness, Very sincerely,

Madame Chiang Kai-shek

My great grandfather was, at the time, working to establish a stable financial system in China. Apparently his astute wife thought a well-made cake would pave the way to a functional Chinese economy.

Dude, those were the days, huh?
